Lesson 1: Why To Build Your Online Brand Today
I have been writing online for over a year now. It started as a fun activity or a hobby, and now here I am. During this time, I have published 180+ articles on Medium, started a weekly newsletter, a free e-book, and a (free) goal checklist.
Over time, I’ve learned a lot about writing — stuff that isn’t necessarily taught anywhere and not seeing most content creators sharing. Most of it would seem pretty counterintuitive on the surface.
That’s why I crafted the following list of 3 writing tips that have helped me stay productive and focused as a writer.
Whether you are writing full, part-time or a new writer, these tips can help you become a better writer.
#1 Keep a running list of ideas whenever you get any
You may have heard of “writer’s block”. It’s when you feel a lack of motivation to write or whatever you write you think it’s not good enough to get published.
If you go through such a time, keeping a list of your ideas can help you.
Either on your phone, Google doc, or your paper notebook. Anything that is most convenient for you to maintain.
The goal is to just keep the words flowing and not worry about whether or not what you’re writing is any good.
Once you get started, the ideas will start to flow and you’ll find it much easier to write.
#2 Set a writing schedule that works best for you
There is no right or wrong way to write. Some people prefer to write in the early morning, while others in night.
Some people like to write in short frequent intervals, while others prefer to write for hours.
The key is to find a writing routine that works for you.
I write mostly on weekends when I feel relaxed or not worrying about meetings, pending office work, or distractions. I find it to be a peaceful time when I can write without interference from the outside world.
You’ll want to experiment with different times of day and different lengths of time to see what feels most natural for you.
There is no right or wrong way to write, so find what works best for you and stick with it.
Turn it into a writing habit over time. Eventually, it will become a habit to write better and more.
#3 Experience life, and write about it
If you follow me, you know I am an advocate of living your life fully.
Best ideas come when you live your life.
I have written my first few articles about my dating, experiences as a woman, healthy living, and random life lessons.
This is one of the best ways to become a better writer is to share your life experiences.
“Write what disturbs you, what you fear, what you have not been willing to speak about. Be willing to be split open.” — Natalie Goldberg
This doesn’t mean you need to write a memoir or autobiography, but you share your overall experience or a lesson learned and how it can benefit others.
Writing about your day-to-day life might not seem like much excitement, but it’s one of the best ways to improve your writing.
By sharing your life, you’ll be able to look back and see how your writing has changed over time.
So if you want to become a better writer, make sure you’re living your life as you go forward in your life.
The question to ask yourself every year, every month, every day, every minute is: Did I live it while I was in it?
Love,
Ankita
