Spark Joy In Your Life To Stay Healthier and Happier Everyday
A guide to elevate your life 100x
Last month I randomly picked up the book- Spark Joy by Marie Kondō and finished it in a couple of days. The author’s philosophy is to keep things that bring you joy and discard everything else.
As people say, you don’t choose the book, the book chooses you.
So after reading the book, I get the urge to declutter my surroundings and my mind.
I reorganized my closet and donated clothes, utensils, some furniture, and a few other items. I followed the KonMari method.
It took me a day to do everything. I must tell you, I am already starting to feel better, lighter, and joyful.
If you don’t have time to do everything as per the book, try doing the below things to spark joy during the Christmas season.
“When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.” — Rumi
Donate your unwanted items to a local charity
You may be into minimalism or not, but simply getting rid of a few unwanted items can spark some serious joy you can imagine.
We all have things that we no longer need or use, but that still occupy our space. We all learn to put up with these annoyances — the blender you never use, expired items in your kitchen pantry, the stack of books that you never seem to read, and the clothes that you haven’t worn in the last couple of years.
Donating them can put them to good use.
Imagine how good it would feel to get that extra stuff out of your home, giving you newfound space and breathing room, all while knowing that stuff was also getting used by someone who needed it. Joy!
“Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things are.” — Marianne Williamson
Cultivate a ‘free fun’ list
With time I have realized, you don’t need to spend huge money to find happiness and joy.
Compile your fun list to refer back to whenever you want to do something fun.
Do some searching online and in your neighborhood for free fun, or low-cost fun that merely requires you to bring your resources.
A few ideas to get you started:
Exploring walking, hiking, or biking trails.
Free museums and galleries.
Walking to the farmer or Amish market on Saturday morning to sample the latest offerings.
Planning to watch movies on week-day to get cheaper tickets.
Photographing your neighborhoods
Reading a fun book in your neighborhood park
Asking a friend to join you for a lunch
When you find yourself craving a bit of happiness or feel down in the dumps, find a free, fun activity that’s sure to spark joy.
Disconnect (for a little while)
When I feel a lack of joy, I feel a lot of other things, like overwhelm, anxiety, and burnout which is especially true if you are sensitive like me.
A little disconnection from technology and constant communication is needed to reset your mind.
When you have your phone contently in your hand, it’s hard to disconnect and not pick up your phone multiple times per hour, habitually opening apps and refreshing emails.
Step away from your laptop, tablet, phone, TV, or smartwatch, and simply go ‘be’ somewhere.
It can be with a book, a friend, or a crossword puzzle, and let your head clear out a bit.
In the quiet of an unperturbed mind, you’ll notice an increased sensitivity to the joys all around you.
When you free your mind, you tend to increase focus and creativity.
“You have to find what sparks a light in you so that you in your way can illuminate the world.” — Oprah Winfrey
