I have been writing online since January 2021. It started as a fun hobby and still is. I haven’t done any marketing of my content or writing on trending topics to gain traction.

But still, it helped me to create a tiny amount of passive income. This is something I never thought of it, but it’s a byproduct of writing online, especially on Medium.

To be honest, it didn’t happen all of a sudden. It’s a gradual process and writing consistently week after week and so far I published 231 ( including this article ) on Medium.

As I am learning to be more well-versed to write on different topics. This is one of the topics, I am not a super expert or earning lots of $$$, but consider it as a beginner guide who wants to start writing online, willing to put in the work to create a passive income stream.

1. Define your primary way to publish

There are many ways available to earn money online and start writing.

The first step is for you to figure out what can you really do and which platform you want to use.

It could be anything:

  1. Creating your blog for example on Medium — just like I did

  2. Doing freelancing work ( Upwork can help you )

  3. Copywriting ( for media houses, online publications )

The goal is to create your online portfolio to let other people notice you.

You can start writing on various topics that interests you. It also helps you to explore what other writers are writing about.

2. Share your work on different platforms

I am not on many social media platforms because I want to keep myself sane. So LinkedIn is the only other platform I am active on and one of my posts went viral earning me 60K+ views as per today.

But if you want to go all in, Instagram, Twitter, and Tik-Tok can be great options for you to share your work and get legit credibility.

Since each platform nuances is different but you can always learn as you move forward in your journey.

3. Engage with the audience

You can’t be successful if other people don’t like your work or if no one reads it.

The best way is to curate content on similar topics you write about.

Connect with people within the same domain, or niche, and create a meaningful connection.

They can help you gain value, confidence, and much-needed attention.

Do this for a few months and you’ll genuinely cultivate meaningful connections.

4. Starting a newsletter

This is one of the early things I did when I started writing online.

I created a substack newsletter. It takes just few steps and platform is super easy to navigate and build your email list.

Again without marketing and publicity, I gained around 800+ email subscribers over 18 months.

I am so thankful for the people who choose to read my work.

5. Create a free digital product

I created my first free e-book last year December and within 1 week I had 90 downloads.

It took me around a month to write and publish my book. The purpose was to enhance my email list. And it worked like a charm.

I used the free version of convertkit. It has so many options to automate and personalized your email content and schedule.

You can use free templates and various blogs on this site to get inspiration.

Lastly-

My motto is to invent yet simply the processes of creating.

I don’t have huge goals (yet!) for my writing, however inclined in learning the ropes of creating while enjoying the overall process.

There are many other ways you can advance your audience and passive income. However, I am not there yet so it’s not ideal for me to talk about it when I don’t have enough credibility.

But I have seen many online creators following a similar pattern to build a multi-million dollar business that started with a tiny step to write online.

Hope it helps you to start your side hustle and help you earn your first $ online.

Passive income is possible if do it consistently and follow above blueprint.

Would love to hear your feedback in comments.

Love,
Ankita
